Whereas Foucault uses these serial histories to suggest how trajectories of genealogical descent can be constructed which are multiple and dispersed, Braudel returns us to a total history in order to conceive how a science of the past may be a science of the present. For Braudel, historical study establishes a pertinence to the present because social reality is the fundamental reality. Foucault uses the present to construct serial histories and so establishes a pertinence no longer reliant on the underlying unity of time and social reality.

Rather than this being Foucault’s Achilles’ heel, as Nancy Fraser claims, it is this which constitutes the radical power of this form of critical and effective discourse. Elias and Braudel, like Foucault, both thematise the problem of the present as a component in constructing criteria of relevance for historical-sociological study. Elias, like Foucault, argues that critical historical study must take into account our involvements and our capacity for detachment. However, whereas Elias thinks of involvement as a condition of social scientific knowledge from which we need to detach ourselves, Foucault presents methods allowing us to work with both involvement and detachment.

One must say that this text is immensely complimentary to the achievements of Annales, to the point where Foucault even adopts its language, writing of ‘general history’, ‘total history’, and ‘serial history’. Indeed, Foucault seems to do the impossible here, to reconcile the notion of the longue durée with his own apparent emphasis (which is also that of the history of the sciences) on discontinuous history. He claims both types of history are effects of the same epistemological mutation in historical thought, one that brings a new continuity to the history of material civilisation while it discovers new forms of discontinuity in the history of thought.
