Under Nationalist rule, South Africa moved from old-style "segregation" to a more comprehensive and systematic form of white supremacy, apartheid (Afrikaans for "apartness"). Very little of the literature on South Africa and the age of the dictators is based on serious archival, or even newspaper, research. 2 Bunting's book, long banned in South Africa, is perhaps the archetypical work of its genre, with a thesis that is a virtual identification of modern Afrikaner nationalism with Nazism, but lacking the scholarly apparatus that would give the work greater credibility.
