I told Ms. Andresen that I was committed to a career in archaeology. As graduation neared, Annette and I had to make a decision about graduate school. UCLA had offered me the prestigious five-year Regents Fellowship and Michigan awarded me an NSF Traineeship, but I had heard nothing about financial aid from Arizona. For several reasons Arizona had become our favorite. We were eager to put some distance between us and both sets of parents, and so that ruled out UCLA, despite the attractions of working with Jim Hill; Michigan was too far from home and too cold.

A. in anthropology at UCLA. Although a chemistry major as a freshman, I was unhappy with the prospect of being confined to such a narrow track. I loved science, especially chemistry, but as the war in Vietnam escalated, I and many other "baby boomers" rethought our values and career goals. I remembered fondly the book The Wonderful World of Archaeology, which I received on October 4, 1958, an eleventh-birthday present from my parents, and the undisciplined reading in classical archaeology I had done in high school.

The site yielded a wonderful mix of deposits, ranging from trash-filled rooms to rooms with many restorable pots and burned roof beams. As the nature of the site became clearer, my research design matured ever so slightly. This is evident from the NSF proposal we fashioned that summer. I recycled parts of the "systemic context" paper, using the term "formation processes" in more or less its modern sense. Although eager to discern the effects of abandonment processes on the Joint site's highly variable room-floor assemblages, I had no specific hypothesesmuch less a suite of methodsin mind.
