The port city of Canton (modern-day Guangzhou), an international trading post located in the Guangdong province, served as a conduit for information as well as goods. There, American and European merchants and sailors shared news of the outside world, especially news of the California gold rush of 1849. As discussed in the previous chapter, internal strife also encouraged many Chinese to leave their homeland and cross the Pacific to America. Many migrants from Guangdong sought refuge from violent conflicts at home, whether they were small-scale fights between family groups within villages or large-scale peasant uprisings such as the Taiping Rebellion of 1854–1864 or the British Opium Wars (1839–1842; 1856–1860), which had proved massively disruptive to China on economical, cultural, and psychological levels.

The Dutch were as ruthless as the Portuguese in gaining their ends. They attacked Portuguese ships and raided Portuguese trading stations. During the 1600s, the Dutch replaced the Portuguese as the dominant power in the spice trade. England and France also sent trading expeditions to Asia. Because the Dutch position was so strong in the East Indies, English and French merchants concentrated on India. The English and French established small outposts along the southern coasts of India. They were able to win trading privileges in these areas in part because the Mughal Empire in India was weak in the south.

The Chinese also built wing-dams to divert stream water to troughs. Hydraulic Mining and Deep Shaft Mining Deep shaft mining, which involved drilling underground mine shafts to access silver and gold, and hydraulic mining, involving the use of highpressure hoses to blast away rock and sediment in order to separate precious metals form the earth, required too much capital for most Chinese. Even those who had the money were usually unwilling to invest because white mobs might destroy or steal the hoses, drills, or other equipment.
